It was the Christening of one of our oldest friends’ baby this summer. Here are a few of the photographs from the ceremony and afterwards…
The reason why I love documentary style photography is because it’s both unobtrusive and honest. It both records events as they happen without interference or manipulation…I always think that real life offers far more than we can make up. Why group people together for photographs when you can capture their natural smiles and gestures that are unique to them while they are in action? Also, no formal posed photograph set up by a photographer can beat the way how close friends and family interact with each other and express themselves.
I also like to photograph the day from a storytelling perspective so that the photographs sit well together in an album. It’s important to get all the key moments as well as moments that a photographer has the luxury of observing whilst everyone is busy. One such photo of the little moments that often go by unnoticed, is the photograph of the siblings plying on the church pews, or the photograph of the smaller children cooing over the newly Christened baby who is being passed round. I think these moments are just as impotent as the key moments, as they help to visually describe the atmosphere of the day, and what it felt like to be there.
